Relieve Your Anxiety With Prayer

In the house I grew up in, my mom had Philippians 4:6 framed in the front bathroom my sisters and I shared.  If I had to guess why she chose to hang it over the toilet I would say to give us a little dose of Jesus each morning.  However to this day it is my go to verse along with Philippians 7  when I get that twinge of anxiety building up inside of me.

During our seasons of anxiety Philippians 4:6 is our instructions of what to do to relieve the anxiety we tend to want to grasp and hold on tightly to, like letting go of it would be a terrible thing.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”  Philippians 4:6

We need to break the chains of fear that cause our anxiety by praying prayers of thanksgiving to God.  Not prayers of whining about the circumstances we are facing. But actually prayers thanking God for the season that cause anxiety.  As I wrote last week, God does not give us these seasons to harm us (Jeremiah 29:11) but to grow us.

Worry wastes, gratitude gives.

“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 4:7)

When we pray for God to relieve us of our anxiety with an attitude of gratitude we will be filled with peace.  As Philippians 4:7 tells us this will be a peace that is more than we can fathom.  God is that big, my friend.  Bigger than you and I can possibly imagine.

Worry wastes, gratitude gives.

I don’t know about you, but for me, I am tired of wasting time worrying about people, places, and things that are out of my control.  I would much rather bring it all to Jesus, with Thanksgiving, to have a wave of peace wash over me.

I say this, because I know it works.  I have been in a season of anxiety over my adult son.  As a mom I want him to make positive choices for himself.  He has actually made choices that could cause him some severe consequences.  Today, though, I  don’t waste time with worry and anxiety, I bring them to God with thanksgiving.  I pray for God’s will over the situation, because He is in control.  And when I do this continually (1 Thessalonians 5:17) God’s peace fills my soul.

During seasons of anxiety it is comforting to know that we have a God who loves us so much He is willing and wants to take away feelings of unease.

I hear God’s voice whisper softly on those days, Look up.  I am here and I am in control.

Heavenly Father, I pray today for those who are suffering from anxiety, worry, and fear.  I ask father that you will place your mighty hand on them and fill them with a sense of peace today to let them know you are near and in control of their circumstances.  I thank you today God for your love, grace, peace and most of all forgiveness.  In your precious son’s name I pray.  Amen.

  1. Jane Ann, it proves how much you are growing in your faith when you can truly give your worries/anxieties to God and *know* that He is bigger than your problems….He is in complete control and knows exactly what the outcome will be! Just as your mom has prayed you through your troubles, now you are doing the same for your son! AHHH…..God is so good! And He rewards our faith in Him!

  2. Thank you for your sweet words and for being a faithful follower of Jesus. The easier, softer way is to follow Jesus and let Him be in control. Worry only wastes our precious time that we can be of service to others. God is oh so good, All the time, He is GOOD! Blessing to you sweet friend!
